Ingredients
- 1-pound red cabbage, coarsely shredded
- 2 quarts boiling water
- 5 tablespoons margarine
- 3 tablespoons flour
- 1 cup milk
- 1 1/2 cups buttered cracker crumbs
- 1/4 cup salt
- 1/2 cup sugar
Directions
- In a 3 quart pot, add 2 quarts of water, the sugar, and the salt. Add your shredded cabbage and boil for 4 minutes. Remove from heat and drain.
- Add the cabbage to a 3 quart, flat casserole dish. In a large cast iron skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Slowly stir in the flour and mix well with the butter. Start to add the milk to the butter and flour. Use a whisk to stir in the milk. You want the sauce smooth with no lumps.
- Continue to cook over medium heat until the mixture starts to thicken. Pour the mixture over the top of the cabbage.
- Sprinkle with buttered cracker crumbs. Bake at 325 degrees for 45 minutes. Serve hot.
